type 2 diabetes mellitus
A chronic condition in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not make enough of it, raising blood glucose.
Overview
Type 2 diabetes develops when cells respond poorly to insulin and the pancreas can no longer compensate, so glucose stays high in the blood. It is the most common form of diabetes and is closely tied to excess body weight, inactivity and family history.
In research it is studied through measures such as fasting glucose and HbA1c, and it sits within a cluster of related metabolic traits including obesity and blood lipid levels.
