hypertension
Persistently elevated arterial blood pressure.
Overview
Hypertension means blood pressure that stays above the usual range over time. It often causes no symptoms, yet it strains the heart and blood vessels and raises the risk of stroke, heart disease and kidney disease.
Blood pressure is reported as two numbers: systolic pressure (while the heart contracts) and diastolic pressure (while it relaxes).
